New Motor test facility at PML
A new, automated motor test facility has been developed by PML Flightlink at their site in Havant, Hants.
The new facility provides a streamlined method of testing PML’s motors, increasing quality control and productivity.
All new motors at PML have been systematically tested using the automated procedure.
Developed in-house at PML, using Agilent ‘Vee’ test development software, the test facility is part of a continued drive to keep PML at the cutting edge of motor design, development and production.
The new facility ensures the high production quality of PML’s motors, while the core unit of the system has potential application for testing and data acquisition in other areas of the company. Automated laboratory testing and production Joystick testing are already scheduled, in an effort to streamline current testing methods.
The design of the testing unit provides a number of benefits from more conventional operations. The graphical operator interface is simple and intuitive to use, with visual motor identification. Bar coded scanning integrates the test system into the production control process, where test results are logged, read and maintained on the corporate network.
The shaft of the motor under test does not need to be coupled to anything to carry out all tests, including a full load test. Electrical properties of the motor measured at the power terminals and spectral analysis of motor noise is used to help determine all the motor characteristics. The motor rotor inertia is used to self load and provide energy for other tests. These features simplify the mechanical complexity and reliability of the test station, increase productivity, and reduce the possibilty of operator error.
PML could provide a service to programme the system using Agilent Vee to deliver turnkey systems to other manufacturers.
PML design and manufacture motors for applications where safety and reliability are critical. Based on flat armature technololgy, the motors are extremely compact and efficient with exceptional controllability.
